NECIR offers internships each year to four Boston Public High School students interested in exploring a career in investigative journalism. Those students have the opportunity to work directly with NECIR staff and BU investigative journalism professors and students to develop, research and produce investigative projects for our media partners.

NECIR staff supervises each student and provides monthly written feedback to their teachers about their skill development, story interests and progress. The internships provide BPS students the chance to gain first-hand knowledge about the future career options available to them in the news industry. The BPS students also work with our ethnic media partners to develop investigative stories geared towards their specific audience.

In future years, NECIR hopes to expand this internship opportunity to students from other high schools throughout New England.

NECIR-BU is partnering with Write Boston, a citywide initiative that seeks to foster a “culture of writing” in all public high schools in Boston,  to enhance our high school internship program.  Each semester, at least two  Boston high school students who have worked with Write Boston on its publication, Teens in Print, will be joining NECIR-BU as interns.   These are students who have had experience reporting and writing stories.   They will be learning the  basics of investigative reporting and working in teams with our reporter-trainees from Boston University and other colleges.
